surprisingly good... My Norelco 8000 series desperately needed new cutters, but I delayed getting them due to the negative reviews of the RQ12+ replacement heads. The original RQ12 head (with cutters that flipped open for cleaning rather than popping off) was selling for $140, which seemed ridiculous, and now it's nowhere to be found. Many reviewers complained that the RQ12+ felt cheaply made and didn't give a good shave.I switched to a Panasonic Arc5. It was good, but I missed my Norelco, which was the most comfortable shaver I've ever used. Then I saw this Amazon ad for the "RQ12Pro" replacement head. I was hoping it was a new iteration of the replacement head, improving on the widely panned RQ12+. At this point, I'm still not sure if that is true, or if it is just a different name for the RQ12+. Googling "RQ12pro" yields very few results, most of them in Polish.I ordered it anyhow. And I was very pleasantly surprised. The box does indeed say "RQ12pro". Like the RQ12+, this RQ12pro does not flip open to clean; rather, you need to pry off the cutters, rinse them separately, leave them on the counter to dry, then reattach them when ready to shave again. That's not quite as convenient as the original RQ12, but really no big deal. My review is based entirely on the quality of the shave.I just had my first shave with this and it gets a big thumbs up! Mowed through 4 days of stubble without any trouble, and left me ultra-smooth, even around the chin and neck. I can't provide a fair side-by-side comparison with the RQ12 because mine is past its prime. But based on my memory of how the RQ12 worked when it was new, this one is just as good if not better. I have no idea if the RQ12pro is a renamed RQ12+ or an improved version. Regardless, I am very happy with it. 5Don't Buy This Face Burner! I have been using Norelco shavers happily for over forty years but this may be the worst thing Norelco has ever produced. The original head that came with my SensoTouch 3D shaver was excellent but is no longer available and this replacement SUCKS. This head does not shave as close as the original and is death for sensitive skin. I have experienced extreme razor burn since using this head and will not/can not use it. In addition to discomfort, the circumference of the heads come to a point that actually catches on the skin and stops the shaver from moving.I have now purchased a Norelco 4500 model and an HQ9 replacement head. This combination essentially matches the excellent shaver I had before buying the SensoTouch 3D, so I now get a close and comfortable shave. I do not understand why Norelco doesn't offer this shaver/head combination in their lineup and I do not understand why Norelco discontinued the head that originally came with the SensoTouch 3D shaver. Must be a bean-counter that hasn't tried the products. 1Better Than the RQ12+ (Your Face Will Thank You) Norelco has finally replaced their widely panned RQ12+ replacement head with the RQ12PRO. What's the difference? I have absolutely no idea. From appearances, the two are exactly the same. From performance, the PRO is much improved. The RQ12+ was never that good to begin with, making shaving a pain (literally a pain) and something I would avoid. The RQ12PRO does a great job without any pulling, even dry. It still has some of the same issues of the RQ12+. It's annoying to clean. It looks and feels cheap. But your face doesn't care about any of those things. My RQ12+ didn't even last me a year of once a week shaves, so let's see how the RQ12PRO does, but so far so good! Three stars cause I like it, but it's no RQ12. 3No other choice, so beware: this is not the original head that your shaver came with. Unfortunately, Philips stopped making the original head for my 1290X, and if you need a replacement, you are stuck with this piece of crap. The main difference is that with the "new" replacement head, the three heads no longer pivot individually. The result is that this head comes nowhere near as comfortable and close a shave as the 1290X used to. Equally unfortunate is that if you are lucky enough to find the original replacement head, it will cost you almost as much as the entire razor.I am not the first person to voice this complaint, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why Philips has totally ignored the complaints of their customers. Picture: Compare for yourself the one-piece "new" head with the original 3 separate-independent moving head. 1Norelco Got It Right; FINALLY! Let s face it; the predecessor heads to these sucked! They were a total engineering failure being horribly uncomfortable, providing a terrible shave, short lifespan, and being overpriced. These new heads are still overpriced but they provide a close comfortable shave. I have only been using the new head for a few months but have not seen any drop in performance yet. 4Less hair pulling - but no close shave - still not as good as the original RQ12 This is still not as good as the original RQ12, but better than the RQ12+ in a few ways. The RQ12Pro does not grab hair like the + did.I have been using the Pro for a few weeks now and have noticed a few changes. Like the +, you still must remove the blades unit from the base and then remove each blade to clean them (they give you a tool, but I have never bothered to use it). This makes cleaning take longer when you want to give the blades a thorough cleaning. The reason this head gets only 3 stars is that even though it no longer pulls on hairs like the +, it seems to cut less closely. So I have longer stubble by the end of the day. I still wish they would just put out the original RQ12 head again and stop this nonsense. I don't know how much they saved on the production costs, but I have started looking for another non-PN shaver. 3It's a painful shave but the results are truly awful. This gives unquestionably the worst shave I have ever experienced. It pulls whiskers out instead of cutting them. It is so bad I suspected it might have been assembled improperly, but no, it's just that bad. I tried this several times thinking (a) the cutters might just need to be run-in and (b) your whiskers get used to it. Neither were true. It's far worse than the 4 year old SensoTouch 3D head which I have gone back to using. It's painful but the result is a truly awful stubbly and uneven shave. It really is that bad. 1My morning shave is terrible Cheaply made compared to the original, that's not my main problem. My morning shave looks terrible not close at all and it pulls the hairs instead of cutting. After shaving it looks like a five o'clock shadow before I even leave the house. And why not make mornings a little more aggravating by shaving with a razor that pulls the hair out instead of cutting it. Shame on you Phillips, with a razor so expensive, I'm sorry I didn't buy a different brand. I read the negative reviews and thought I'd like to try it my self and make my own decision, well it's the same as most others have said, terrible. I wont be buying another that's for sure. Phillips, you've lost a customer. 1the pros: good shave, compatible, more durable, same flexibility. Cons: price higher, cur design could be blade replace only. The design worked on my older shaver no problem. it isnt hinged on the lower assembly but on the top with a simple and much more durable pivot. the range of rotation of the blades is the same as older models. cleaning is much easier, all i do is blow air across the bottom and the top and put it back together. the shave is as good or better than the older shaver model with the benefit of being more durable.you have direct access to the blades now and can really get in there and clean them if you want. i use my shaver not only to do my face but my whole head as well and for this it needs to be very reliable and strong. i have no problem doing that with this product. i originally bought a cheaper product but it didn't last long and i actually had the bottom black cover part come off. i tried to fix it but the cheaper shaver was never the same afterword. with the new design of this product this would never be able to happen.the pros: good shave, compatible with older handles, more durable design, same flexibility as older model. where the silver part meets the black part is where the hinge is. easy cleaning with direct access to blades for super cleaning.cons: with the assembly so well designed and easy direct access to the blades i feel you should be able to buy just the blades and replace them instead of the whole assembly. this would significantly reduce the replacement costs. im sure its still a good value as is as it will last longer and work better than before however it could be even less expensive if it was a blade replacement only. that leaves open an opportunity for a third party to sell the blades by themselves so if i were Panasonic i'd take note of this and just provide them instead. im sure thats the kind of decision that involves their profit margins and whether they are worth selling in the first place. 5NOT the original but it works for a rotary fan I am a Philips rotary fan for over 40 years. I have tried several of the high end razors from competitors and the rotary system, for me, continues to be the best combination of close and comfortable shave. That said, this head replacement for the 1200 series appears to be lacking in a couple of areas; smoothness and head cleaning. The blades simply do not reach the areas reached by the older system. It takes a number of efforts to achieve the same results. After a morning shave, there remain several "rough spots" both in the main facial area as well as those on the cheeks and close to the nostrils. The saving grace is the Norelco Clean Jet System for cleaning. It Works for cleaning the heads. This system requires that you remove the cutting heads for a absolute clean. This includes a manual re-set using a retainer ring. I found this difficult to achieve to the point of being frustrating to seat the ring. Using the original cleaner and the Norelco Clean Jet System appears to eliminate this step. As close as possible with lubricating and cleaning of the blades. This combination seems to work for me. 4
